Like others, I found this website after running into other former campers (thank you, Dan Gould).
Reading the stories brings back a flood of memories from my years at camp (1972-1979, counselor 1982). So much happened during those summers and so many life lessons were learned. I am fortunate to live in Highland Park now where I periodically run into others from camp.
If I had to pick one memory above all, it was the last night at camp and the last song of the summer, "Leaving on a Jet Plane." Singing the song was difficult (I do not think that I was ever able to finish the words) as it meant that another incredible summer had come to an end. As a counselor, I knew the summer was successful when campers who were homesick at the beginning of the summer became camp sick at the end of the summer. Thinking of that last night, I can still hear Erin singing and the song can still bring tears to my eyes.
For those who may not remember the words, here they are:
All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' this early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Alreaday I'm so lonesome I could cry
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now they don't mean a thing
Every place I go I think of you
Every song I sing I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes, I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the time when I don't have to say...
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go
Leaving on a jet plane
Leaving on a jet plane
Hail to the Forest, Hail to the Trees, Hail, Hail, Camp Horseshoe.
