Does anyone remember, did the Canadian start at the end of the Gunflint Trail and go through the Northern Light Lake region?

Michael,

Yes. Typically we would launch at Voyageur Canoe Outfitters on the Gunflint Trail (across from camp's property) and travel through Northern Lights area and beyond.

Michael,

The Canadians that I led both departed and returned to the Tip o' the Trail, Don and Opal Enzenauer's Voyageur Outfitters. The route was out the Saganga River, through the NE end of Sag Lake, through Canadian Customs on the island, through Pickerel Lake, into Northern Lights Lake and then either around to the falls or back out through Pickerel, depending on the type of trip the group wanted.

But always through Don and Opal's.

The Canadian that I went on with Darrel Sneel and Norbert Biss went north of Thunder Bay to Poshkakagen Lake. Tranlsated that means sleep in a couple gravle pits during travel and then eat nothing but fresh Walleyes the rest of your days.

As always,

Scotty

Wow, sounds like a cool Canadian you went on! I know I was there but Russell and I pretty much never left our tent...other than to eat Walleye. I do recall a skeeter infested gravel pit the first night. I think we slept in the bus and remember being pretty miserable.

My first Canadian was in 1961 with tripping counselor Red Wright (from Grantsburg). We went up to Lake Kawnipi and caught many walleyes and smallmouth. It's a good thing we did, because that Silver Falls portage was murder, even on 16 year old legs. I went again as a counselor with Norb Biss, maybe in 1964 or thereabouts. We did the Northern Lights route then. My most recent Canadian was in 2000, when Barby, our daughters, and I were back for the Birch Trail year 2000 reunion, and we went out of Ely.

Just found this site, see many old timers names that I recognize from my years at camp. I also did a Canadian with Norb Bliss, quite the outdoorsman and character.

About 20 years ago my wifes brother and I started doing Canandian's. We must have been on 25 trips..................generally in a canoe for a week or more. We have been to the Artic Circle fishing out of a canoe on the Thelon River. Both of us have caught many pike and lake trout over 20 pounds during our Canadians.

We usually canoe on the Canadian side of the Boundry Waters, great smallmouth.lake trout and pike fishing..............plus wonderful wildlife viewing.

Horseshoe taught me the rope's on how to enjoy the great outdoors.

Hi. Long time no talk. Our trip started at Seagull, went into Lake Saganaga, through Northern lights lake and back to Seagull as I recall.
