 Remembrances
Author: Bob Harris

I stumbled onto this website a few months ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed the trips down memory lane. Seeing names from the past come to life("old-timers" like Don Cohen, Al Kapstrom, Bob Gottlieb; "contemporaries" such as Mitch Wittenberg, Bob Moss, John Pritzker, Michael Mallace; "newer-timers" such as Adam Marton, Bobby Mitchell, Michael and Steve Motew(does Steve still have a mouth full of braces?) has been wonderful. The messages all recall a simpler time. Horseshoe was not a place I went for the summer, rather it was a part of me to which I returned each summer.
Keith Liberman and I took our kids up to Horseshoe several years ago right after Josie had destroyed it. It was hard to envision where each building had previously stood and relics were few(although I found a small piece of the tennis courts that I use as a paperweight). Our disgust and disappointment at the destruction of the Camp was only partially assuaged by a prank we pulled(no details forthcoming; Keith is a lawyer and has insisted that we divulge no specifics).
I now live in the Bay Area(specifically Redwood City) and work as a Urologist. I would enjoy reconnecting with old friends and Horseshoe alumni. My e-mail address is: robgharris@hotmail.com (Yes, people out here call me Rob not Bob which I have grown to prefer).
Regards to all,
Rob

Rob,

I will never forget my first year at Horseshoe in Guide C with you as our counselor. I think you were either in or going to medical school at the time, and controlled well our assembly of personalities (Adam "Bitts" Bitterman, Rick "The Chickman" Fogelman, Greg "Groggg" Gordon, Jon "Tabasco" Citow, Stephen "Pee" Wise and me Steve "Quazi" Motew). I also remember us giving you a hard time about your 'Birchtrail" girlfriend of the summer.

Coincidentally, although we never kept in touch, Greg Gordon, Jon Citow and myself all graduated from the University of Illlinois medical school together in 1992 (Citow-neurosurgery, Gordon-medicine I think, Me- vascular surgery). Who knows what remote influence was brewing that summer at Horseshoe.

Good to see you here on this memorable site....by the way...lost the braces the next year....

Steve

Steve,
Great to hear from you after all these years. I was a counselor for quite a number of years but your Guide C cabin was one of my all-time favorites. Your reiteration of each camper's nickname brings a nostalgic grin to my face. The Birchtrail reference is also most appreciated.
I agree that that is a remarkable number of MD's to emanate from one log cabin; perhaps there was some mysterious substance in the Tabasco sauce.
I would enjoy meeting up with you again if your travels take you to the Bay Area. My e-mail address is: robgharris@hotmail.com
Take care,
Rob

Steve,
Bob (Rob) Harris had a strange and positive influence on my college choice. To this day I somewhat sheepishly tell folks who ask that a camp counselor who went to Brown influenced me to go. I don't tell them that we never discussed it or that Mr. Harris and I were not particularly tight. I just thought he was cool. Thanks Rob. I hope you are well in the Bay Area.

Bob (Rob?)--Ever any further trouble with that bruised kidney that led to your staying in Duluth for several days?? When was that? Around 1972 or 73 when you were a stude or superstude? Maybe that's why you went into urology! Best regards. Don

Don,
Thanks for your inquiry. Your memory is quite good. It was 1973(my Stude year and I think Merc and your first year as Camp Directors) when I suffered a renal contusion thanks to a good(and legal) hit by close friend Doug Betten. I spent 10 days in the hospital in Duluth but the kidney healed spontaneously and without sequelae. Interestingly, it was not this episode that got me interested in Urology. Rather it was Jimmy Mutchnik's father, an Urologist in Highland Park, who generously let me tag along with him in the OR one day when I was in College. The rest is history.
I've enjoyed reading your(and Barbie's) numerous postings. It sounds like you have carved out a nice life in the Pacific Northwest. Please do look me up if you make it to the Bay Area; it would be great to reminisce over old times. My e-mail address is: robgharris@hotmail.com

Rob

Bob,

It was great to read the stories and here about your career. I was a Woodsman the year of that wonderful Ranger football game. As a little kid, I really though that game was the tops.

I also remember a Lieberman/Harris treasure hunt (possibly in Red/Blue competition) that may have also predestined you to become a urologist. Do you remember being on the Big Horse with a tennis ball can and offering a challenge to all of us dumb-founded treasure hunters?

Steve,
I can't remember the incident(re: tennis can on the Big Horse) you mentioned. Please refresh my memory. Thanks,
Rob

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. It's possible that my memory is foggy. Probably best to leave this alone.

Best regards,

Steve

Bob, er, ah Rob that is,
do you remember the t-shirt collection you had? I still remember the disappointment on you face when I refused to trade you my Bogalusa Lumberjacks football jersey in 1976 when we were counselors! I still have and cherish that shirt (which I found in a house I rented while attending Tulane U. in New Orleans).
Regards from Neil Speer in Atlanta (I was a Nashville camper)

Neil,
Good to hear from you after all these years. Your memory is better than mine; I can't honestly say I remember your jersey but I'm sure I still want it!
Take care,
Rob
