 Camp Days

Don Cohn just sent me this website. I am glad he did. What a hoot. My brothers Lee and Andy and I each attended Camp Horseshoe (Andy has since passed away) and I can speak for everyone in saying how important it was in our lives. Not only was camp great fun, but it grew my love of the outdoors to the extent that in later life I moved to Oregon. Among other things, including being a university professor, my wife and I operated a river outfitting business for 10 years. I am sure this was due to my early experiences canoeing (actually banging off rocks) down the St Criox and Namekagan (sp?) rivers, camping out etc. I recognize some of the names on the site, but frankly can't remember who I bunked with. Anyone out there remember if we were in the same cabin at some point?

Hi Bob,

Of course I do! Woodsman D with John Stransky, Bruce Aronson, Dick Gottleib, Neil Kalishman and my memory stops about there. Of course, that is 5 and a counselor. How are you. I live in Wilmette with my wife & 2 boys; am a computer consultant. Where do you live?

Bruce Aronson! That's the name I was looking for. I was in a cabin with him and remember him as a really good guy.

Bob- I remember all of you guys. In fact, somewhere down the line I think we're related (Grandmother's maiden name was Doppelt). Didn't one og you play trumpet?

So sorry to hear about Andy. Hope you and Lee are well.

Bruce Aronson & I were in Woodsman D together with Neil Kalishman, John Stransky, Bob Doppelt and there was someone else but I can't remember who. Our counselor was Jim Gottleib. I am pretty sure that Bruce was from St. Louis. bob, John and myself were all Highland Parkers.

Bruce was probably in my Pioneer B cabin (Scotty, Tom Beaubaire, me, Bruce, Mark Tauster and Richard Salenfriend). Myer Snell was our counselor and our claim to fame that year was caring for Bambi, a deer we tamed and took care of. Merc probably ate the damn thing as soon as we left camp.

. For 2 t pops and a sucker can you recall Myer Snell's morning-time claim to fame?

There's a great story about Bruce Aronson from pre-camp (counselor training for those of you who were never counselors). As I recall, John Pelto from Rice Lake was the counselor of a cabin. John wrote his first counselor letters his cabins' parents at the end of the first week, like he has to. He writes one set of parents something like this: "Dear Dr. and Mrs. XXXX: My name is Johns Pelto and I'm Jimmy's counselor this summer. I wanted you to know that Jimmy is doing really well even after only a week here. He caught a bass the other day and already has his yeoman in archery. Please feel free to write with any questions. Sincerely, John Pelto." The following week, John gets a letter like this from the parents: "Dear John: Thanks so much for your letter about how Jimmy's summer is going so far. It sounds like he's having a great time. We'd be even more interested in how our son, Bruce, is doing. Etc., ETc., Etc." It was, of course, put in the wrong envelope. Fortunately, Bruce's father, Don, was a former Horseshoe camper/counselor also. After that incident, the administration checked all letters/cards written by counselors to parents before they were sent.I think I have this all correct, but if not, I'm sure others will correct me. Don

Bob,

Just found this site... How cool!!! I went to Horseshoe two years.Your brother Lee was in my cabin. I think Alan Halle (a New Orleanian like me) was in our cabin too. Steve Small was my counselor 1year (he was terrific), and I think Moose Gordon 2nd year (a wonderful guy). Does that sound right???

I remember that Steve Small's brother, Bill, also a counselor, got hit with the shot put on the A-Field during our weekly competition (name of which escapes me). It was not a good thing...
