 I Remember
Author: Steve Sensibar

My brother, Jordy, just e-mailed me this site, and I have now spent three and half hours reading all the postings. Heck, it beats working! I don't know if any of you remember me. But, I remember...:
feeling so good when the bus turned into the gate, bumping along the road past the A-Field, and seeing the lake for the first time that summer;
struggling up to the HOH at night (via flashlight at first, but by the fifth week knowing every root by heart);
the buddy board with the little metal tags;
finally being able to swim out to the raft;
a long backpacking trip led by Brian Aubin, that ended at a resort in Trego(?), made even more challenging by Merc's map from 1934;
our Canadian where John Pritzker smeared limburger cheese on the motor of the bus so the smell nearly killed us (that still makes me laugh);
basketball with Karl;
the foreign counselors, especially
Mile Damjonovich, who never understood English when it involved work for him to do, and
Con McCarthy, the incredible English soccer player;
Frankie D assigning quadrant duty as punishment ("you keep f***ing up, and we'll name that quadrant after you!");
sand steak, sand soap, sand flies, sand everywhere;
blueberries in the woods;
how happy we were to see our parents come on parents weekend, and how equally happy we were to see them leave;
hamburger night; and
Bob Mercier, probably the best role model for integrity I ever knew.

Sure there's lots more, but it's your turn. I'm just glad that my wife, Julia, got to see it when we went to post camp back in the 80's. She can appreciate some of the memories, by at least knowing some of the dramatis personae and the locales. We live in England now with our two daughters (Ayla, 6, and Esme, 4). I can't say I miss Horseshoe, since I never think that it's gone. It lives on for me in every one of your stories.

Hail to the Forest (and stay the hell away from that damned tetherball!!).
Steve

I do remember the cheese on the motor routine. One of my more inspired ideas. What I can't remember is the year. Your other thoughts are right with one exception. I thought Quadrant #4 WAS named after me. It was my home away from home. It's where I sat when Donnie came with news that I was going to co-lead a Canadian. I think I had named most of the lillypads and had developed a personal relationship with the fish in that area.

It was 1973 (pretty sure). The other 14'ers included Glenn Winternitz, Stu Ruby, Bill Engel, Peter Loeb, Tom Lowenburg, Bruce Hainsfurther, Jeff Aronson, Rodney Barstein, and my age catches up with me at this point. There were a few others, as I recall we had a very large 14 that year, but time has stolen some of my memory.

What's amazing to me is that we all tend to write, "I don't know if you remember..." I think for most of us, we didn't realize at the time the real sense of family we had.

I have always attributed my sense of values and my very core to my summers at Horseshoe. We all know that it can't be explained to someone who never had the experience.

And speaking of family... aren't we supposed to be related somehow Peter? :-)

Pigpen--Had I known you were planning on limburger cheese on the engine, I might of thought twice. But I think we wanted you out of camp for 10 days at any cost!! P.S. Again, great to see you 2 weeks ago in SF.

I saw Mark Schwartz a month or so and he turned me on to this site. It is so wonderful reading all the postings which have rekindled so many memories for me and seeing so many familiar names of those that I spent my youthful summers with.
One of my lasting memories for me were the week-long trips on the "Ranger" and sailing through the Apostle Islands.

Hello to All

Randy

Remember the A-Field pump? That was the best-tasting water I ever drank. Always just the right temperature, and crystal clear. I remember the older guys kindly pumping water for the younger kids. I also remember when there were no others there how challenging it was to pump water for yourself. It was an accomplishment to finally master the one-handed pumping action so I could drink using my other other hand. Ah, those hot A-Field days that we thought would never end....

I believe that the entire alliteration was: Big, bad, belly-buckin', butt-bumpin', bronco-bustin' Bob Thompson. Oh and here's an interesting little something about Bob Thompson that you probably didn't know: he invented film. Betcha didn't know that.

There were 14 of us in total. Add myself, David Abramson, Brian Adelman(living in Israel, I believe), Teddy Bloom and DeMar(can't remember first name). That leaves one.

I think this was during a super inspection. My Forester year, which would have been 1976.

Hey David, how are you doing? Larry DeMar was in our cabin, and there was one more. We did have 14. Who was that 14th 14er....? This doesn't reflect on him, only on my poor memory. I'll wrack my brain some more.

Yep. Looks like me and Jordy. If that was 1979, then I was a Stude and I can only assume that the picture was taken immediately after one of us finished telling a very, very hilarious joke.

Yeah, it was a ton of hair. The picture was taken during the red/blue super relay.

That's my brother, Yale, in the white shirt in the background. He was one year and out. Joel Sakes (sp?) scared him.

Scott... I definitely remember Yale that year. Funny, I was thinking that Joel was the missing Cabin 14 member as discussed above. The 14ers of 1973 were a memorable group for me. 1973 was my pioneer year, but it turned out that 3 of that group ended up being my conselor (Engel, Barstein and Bloom for part of a summer).

Hi Steve:

Thought you'd like to know that Bruce is alive and well and lives 2 blocks from me. I'll let him post his information, if he wishes. But I know you'd be interested that he is still close with Jeff Aaronson and Lee Scharff. So camp ties really are binding, which is something I tell my son regularly.

Brad -

I can remember vividly as if it was yesterday you going into the Butt Bumpin' ... Bob Thompsen rendition. Jordy was used to mimic him bringing us to tears, making comments etc. Those were good times. Do you still wear that green hat when you pitch?

Lee Scharff! That completes our roster. What a great cabin that was. Can it really be almost 30 years??

Brad, all of our jokes were hilarious. Oh, sure maybe not the first time, but after 3 or 4 hundred times they get pretty funny. Jeff, how much to burn that negative?

well, considering that it's now digital and spread across the Internet... burning the negative wouldn't cost you much... then again, there is Photoshop... we could fix the hair problem.

Hi Steve!
My first couselor, 1976 Pioneer A. How great to see your name! I haven't been to the site in a while. I've been busy getting the house together for our first child due end of Nov. Do you still practice karate? I remember learning from you on the beach. How about flying... didn't you want to learn? Do you remember our cabin, Matt Lemer, Don Anoff, Steve Gerber, Bobby Haddon...who am I missing? Don't forget...please don't use the toilets between Pioneer A & B!

Flip

Hey Flip, good to hear from you! And congratulations! Better get your sleep now, since you won't get any more for a long while. I'm glad you named all the cabin, since I might have had a little trouble there. As it is, I think you got all of them. Like yesterday, but it's over 25 years?? I love this site for the way it stops time and allows us to slide along it.
Never did learn to fly (a plane), but I still do martial arts. My older daughter, the six year old, is into it now too, and we went to a tournament a few weeks ago. We both won trophies and she was so tickled about that.
It's a cold gray morning here in England, and it feels just right for some ping-pong and shuffleboard. See you at the Rec Hall.
All the best, Steve
