Bob "Rosey" Rosenfeld turned me on to the site when I saw him at High Holy Day services this year. I've been enjoying reading your messages and reminiscing about summer days amid the pines. I took a few good pictures during my time at camp. From time to time I’ll post a few so that some of you can enjoy the memories as well.

During the holidays I decided to make an effort to begin reconnecting with friends I’ve lost touch with over the years. I was very successful in contacting the first group I set out to reach. This site will certain aid me in that quest.

Although I was never fortunate enough to have attended Camp Horseshoe as a camper, I have never forgotten the times there and the peace and contentment that I felt each Fall after being there. My wife Charlene (married ’83) spent a week of our honeymoon there during pre-camp. That’s the last time I saw camp.

Many of you have expressed regrets that the camp did not survive. But you see it still survives. It survives in the type of men all of you grew up to be. It survives in the way you approach your lives and your families. It survives in your hearts and memories. Camp Horseshoe itself was just a place, a stretch of sand and pines in the Northwoods. What made it so special were the men, both counselor and camper, that grew wiser there. What made it special were the values that we took with us when we left; the values that were instilled in it to the core by Doc H and Gordy. As long as the “boys of summer” remember, Camp Horseshoe will live on.

Regards to all,

Roy,

I attended camp from 1980 through 1987. I remember your name and have a vague recollection of your face. However, I do have one distinct memory from the summer of 1980 that I would like to share. I hope I am connecting the right memory with the right person, if not, I guess I am getting old (it was over 22 years ago).

I was a Pioneer in Pioneer C with John Dinnes. During the second week of Red/Blue competition I experienced my first Super Relay. I think you were a blue team advisor that weekend. That Sunday afternoon you painted your face blue and dubbed yourself the "Blue Goon". You were jumping around and yelling with that southern drawl, so much so, that I could not help getting into the spirit of the event with amazing vigor. This was despite the fact that my event was the lowly scavenger hunt at the Wildlife Lodge, as opposed to the glamorous rock dive. Being a Chicago native I was probably picking up P.I., when the list clearly stated wintergreen leaf. But that didn't matter. My only memory was being psyched up by the completely insane "Blue Goon".

If this was in fact you, thanks for the memory and the great picture of the rainbow.

Joel Lewis

Well, I do remember... I think it was your first year at Horseshoe Roy, that you were my counselor. It was my Woodsman year, which would have been 1975.

I have a ton of pictures, that I really should scan and post. Some really incredible shots...

Your pic has given me the motivation now!

Thanks!

I don't think so Bruce. I believe it was taken with an old camera my 1st year at Horeshoe 1973.

Roy,

Thanks for posting the picture. I've saved it on my computer's desktop background. It brings back great memories every time I use the computer.

Roy,
sorry to bring that up. I still vividly remember how upset you were about tipping on the nam. I and my fellow campers were always fairly intimidated by you and i remember that we were trying to make ourselves pretty scarce while you dried out your stuff by the campfire. Are you still singing 'sweet carolina woman'?

Hi Bruce,

Don't sweat it. I let that go a long, long time ago. As for singing, I don't do much these days. But I can tell you that I did fulfill a dream I had on my wedding day. I surprised my wife at our reception with a song I wrote just for her, backed up by the band, who just happened to be close friends of ours as well. It was the only time all that day that I got nervous. I do still have my guitars and play on occassion.

My daughter, Rebecca, learned to play on that old beatup "river" guitar I learned on. She is now a freshman at MTSU and my son David (13) is now slated to pick it up and learn. It always had good karma.

I plan to post more of the pictures I took during my times at camp in the future. I think some of them nmight even have you in them somewhere.

regards,

Roy

A couple of pics for y'all. I have about 300 to 400 images mostly from the summer of 1979. Will post a few here and eventually I'll have them all available on an MSN community.

Some of my pictures were taken in B/W and developed at camp.
