 Porkies 1985

J.B. Fleisher,

How is the arm! I don't think there was a more memorable trip. Broken arm, 3 days of a bear chasing us, no food, I busted my chin and now have a John Travolta dimple for life, and you are right, the best BigMac I have ever eaten. You missed Steve Stern in your post. I believe he was on the trip. I will be in Chicago from October 24 to October 27 attending the yearly Infectious Disease Society of America Conference. If you are in Chicago and want to get a group together I would love to meet for drinks.

Abel,

Great to see that you found the site. Although I was not on your Porkies trip with J.B., I did get to see him in agony for the next few weeks.

I also remember a Chewamegon trip with you, where we played capture the flag in the woods. You took on the role of Rambo and told great tales of your jungle training in Panama after the game. Talk about some bad odds, a couple of north shore brats against a jungle warrior.

Another great memory was when you were a Guide counselor and I was in Woodsman C. I was in your cabin visiting Jeff Eiserman and you gave me a candy bar. It was one of the best days of the summer.

You should name a time and place around your hotel in Chicago for drinks. I am sure people will respond and meet you there, especially if they work or live in the city. I will most certainly attend and will let as many people know as I can.

Joel

Joel,

Nice to hear from you. I had a blast playing with your minds! There are some who still believe that I had a plane and would fly in and out of "Minong International" during my day off with Andy Lask as a co-pilot. I would love to sit down and catch up with all that interested in meeting. I will be staying at the Sheraton Downtown arriving on the 24th of October. How about Friday the 25th? Happy hour 5 PM or any time after or if anybody has a better suggestion let me know. Jeff Eiserman, now there is somebody I haven't heard from in a long, long time. Last I heard he became a body builder. Joel time does fly, actually I was a Ranger counselor when Jeff was in my cabin. That was my first year as a counselor and I certainly enjoyed it so much I kept going back. Many learned how to water ski with the Abel De La Rosa patented method of throwing tennis balls to get skiers out of the wake.

Hi Abel: It's been a while. I see your name and, for some reason, can only think of soccer. Jeff is doing well, lives in Glencoe, IL (as do I) with a great wife and two young children. If I see him in time, I'll tell him about you being in town. Hope all is well. Scott

Abel,
I think you were the one who coined the nickname "Big Lew" for me. To this day, I still hear people shout that name across a room. They are usually Horseshoe people. Great to hear from you and I look forward to seeing you later this month. By the way, I was one of those gullable punkaneers who believed that you knew how to fly a plane! If you could fix JB's arm with some sticks and tape, why not?!

Brian

Abel- It's great to hear from you. My arm has degenerative arthritis and I needed a bone graft after the summer. Unfortunately, the statute of limitations for my potential med mal case has expired. Just joking. You did an excellent job with two sticks and a bandana. That trip was probably the best in my eight years at camp. I live in the Chicago area and would love to get together when your in town.

I remember that trip in 1985 as well. I am still in disbelief how the events that took place on that fateful trip came about. To me, it's just my opinion, I find it ironic how a medical student at that time happened to be the counselor on the trip when bones were being broken, how a counselor who as a child grew up next to the jungles of Panama could not evade a bear, nor show any ability to protect his food supply especially given his background of living in the mean streets of Panama City during his youth where evading the theft of ones loaf of bread was a necessity for the De La Rosa family survival.

I still find it amazing that such an accomplished individual could run into so many problems during a five day walk through the woods. How is it that counselors from more civilized backgrounds, with not a clue as to which end of a tent is up or down, no idea if a plant is PI or a fern (I have the scares to prove this) could survive this trip year after year as if it was nothing more than a walk in the park. No injuries, no food problems, no animal issues, no reason for parents to worry about the safety of their sons.

To this day the trip of 1985 still does not make sense to me.

Like I said that's my opinion.

Andy Lask

Andy- how are you? Great to read your post. It's been awhile since Guide C. I'm living in HP with my wife and two sons (#3 is due in May). Are you still in the area? If so, it would be great to get together. Perhaps, when Abel is in town and we can discuss what went wrong in 1985. By the way, I'm surprised a prima donna such as yourself ever lead a Porkies. I don't believe it. If so, did someone carry your pack? Just wondering. J.B.

I remember seeing Andy, Abel and crew disembark from the Buckboard after that trip to the Porkies looking like survivors from a Panamanian deep jungle prison camp.

OK Wilma,

First, just because the Canal Belongs to Panama, there is no need to get nasty!
If you recall, I had another counselor on the trip called Eric Stevens. Need I explain more? I believe Frank D named a new quadrant after him after we came back from that trip.

Lets give credit where credit is due. Sure Abel did a great job fixing J.B.'s arm, but sharing a tent with J.B. I had to deal with the rest. "Eph, can you zip my sleeping bag. Eph, can you tie my shoes." My 2 year old son is less demanding.

And I'll defend Lask's honor. I've been backpacking with him. We blazed a new trail on the Chewamagon (sp?) when I was a Ranger, with Lowie as the other counselor. A trail never used before or since (because it sucked). We had a great time. Though I've never seen someone backpack in a white Miami Vice Don Johnson suit before....

I am proud to say I am a survivor of that trip.

Who can recreate the camper list though?

Matt,

I haven't been on the site in a while. I would love to see those pictures. Also, I cannot recall who was on the trip. Do you remember?

Joel
