I remember that trip in 1985 as well. I am still in disbelief how the events that took place on that fateful trip came about. To me, it's just my opinion, I find it ironic how a medical student at that time happened to be the counselor on the trip when bones were being broken, how a counselor who as a child grew up next to the jungles of Panama could not evade a bear, nor show any ability to protect his food supply especially given his background of living in the mean streets of Panama City during his youth where evading the theft of ones loaf of bread was a necessity for the De La Rosa family survival.
I still find it amazing that such an accomplished individual could run into so many problems during a five day walk through the woods. How is it that counselors from more civilized backgrounds, with not a clue as to which end of a tent is up or down, no idea if a plant is PI or a fern (I have the scares to prove this) could survive this trip year after year as if it was nothing more than a walk in the park. No injuries, no food problems, no animal issues, no reason for parents to worry about the safety of their sons.
To this day the trip of 1985 still does not make sense to me.
Like I said that's my opinion.
