 The traditions will continue...

As I began writing my thoughts to the Horseshoe Nation, I am sitting on a dock looking out at the water and pine trees on a beautiful lake in the Northwoods. I could not be in a more perfect setting.

Camp Horseshoe was such a special place for so many of us. Our futures were shaped by people like Doc and Mrs. H, Gordy and Josie Morrison, Bob and Mike Mercier, Don Cohen and Scottie Morrison. Let’s not forget Frankie Demyan, Harry Prendergast and the countless other counselors and campers that are part of Camp Horseshoe. They instilled in me a love for camp, appreciation of the great outdoors and a longing for the Northwoods. During my Cabin 14 year in 1979, I remember having a conversation with Bobby Mitchell that one day we should try and run Camp Horseshoe. My dream has become a reality.

My wife Fran and I along with our 3 children (Max 8, Nikki 6 and Sarah 3) spent 10 wonderful years as Directors of Camp Kawaga. We were lucky to have many Camp Horseshoe Alumnus boys join us at camp. I modeled the camp after my own experiences at Horseshoe, 1975-1979 (brother Stu 1972-1974). The All-Night Treasure Hunt, Super Relay (of course water boil), Get Lost, Green-Brown, Message to Garcia, Boundary Waters/Canadian for the 14ers, Ranger Sailing Trip on Lake Superior, Porkies, Flambeau, Namekagon canoe trips, Lower Brule for the best canoers were all part of my program. I even called Merc to find out about how they pulled off the Chief Namekagon visits (I’ve been sworn to secrecy). It still wasn’t Horseshoe!

18 months ago, we began a search to find a spot for the reopening of Camp Horseshoe. I visited camps in Maine, looked at properties in Wisconsin and Michigan, from Ghost Lake (no motor boats allowed) to the North Eastern part of the state. I also called every existing camp, at least twice, in Northern Wisconsin. I even had Danny Gould talk to an older women whose family owned property near Horseshoe. None of them fit for numerous reasons. I recently read that Doc H searched for months and months (checking lakes for sand when the ice broke) until finally settling in Minong. So after our 18-month search, we have found an incredible property just outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It was a former camp with 140 acres surrounded by woods, a beautiful sand bottom lake (a little larger than Little Horseshoe), over 3000’ of lake frontage and has a creek running through the back of the property.

Camp Horseshoe and all the wonderful traditions we grew up with will re-open in 2004!

Horseshoe was a unique camp for many reasons. The property was definitely one reason but not the most important one. The values started by Doc H, the love for the outdoors passed down to us, the spirit, the friendships, the balance of sports and camping, the traditions, were all special aspects of Horseshoe. These are the reason I wanted to make camping my life.

We hope you will share the excitement with us and as Horseshoe alumni, you will become part of the next chapter of the great Horseshoe Legacy. We look forward to sharing memories, creating new ones together and hearing from all of you.

Hail to the Forest!

Jordan Shiner

P.S. We are beginning to build our web site at www.camphorseshoe.com We are going to be devoting a section to Horseshoe Alumni. We would love to scan any old photos or camp memorabilia you may have. We will return anything we are given. Thanks.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing that would make this news better is if I had a son to go to the new Camp Horseshoe. I guess this will be the moment of truth for all us alumni if we can help generate kids to fill up Camp. I for one pledge to help in any way possible. Hail to the Forest for the next 100 years.

Dear Jordan,
I read your text with great pride, admiration and excitement. Our son Tim and I (former campers and I a counselor at Horseshoe) would like to extend our best wishes and future success to you and your wife for reviving in reality all those wonderful memories, values and traditions. Having literally just returning from Little and Big Horseshoe for a week of complete tranquility and chill, I too say Hail to the Forest from the Northwestern part of Wisconsin to the Eastern part of Wisconsin - both regions blowing the bugle and raising the Horseshoe Flag.
Congratulations. Tim you better have sons.......................................

Dear Jordan;

My name is Larry Lubliner and I attended camp from 1952-1959 plus or minus. I can't begin to tell you the number of times over the years that memories of my camping years come flooding back along with names like Jim Merrill, Doc and Gordy who taught me so much about the outdoors and fishing. Frankie who ran the "A" Field like the professional coach that he was and the myriad number of other campers and counselors who had a major impact on my young life.

What a disappointment it was to learn that Scott was closing the doors but what a glow I got reading your thread and learning that Camp Horseshoe was going to have a new beginning. I look forward to hearing progress reports and perhaps someday my grand children will attend. Something for your consideration after you get things up and running. A re-union after camp one year for those like myself who would like to wax nostalgic.

BEST OF LUCK,

Larry Lubliner

Jordan

John Pritzker here ...

Too late for my 19 and 16 year old guys but I have a 10 year old who still feigns interest when I go on about Bambi (my Pioneer B cabin adopted her) Chief Namakagon, Red Blue Green Brown, , etc.

I would be ecstatic if one day Sam wound up with had half the wonderful memories I have from my years at Horseshoe. To accomplish that you'll need an endless supply of sand, barely exposed tree roots and a crusty crafts couselor screaming, "Hey you, keep away from that tetherball!"

When you have markekting materials pulled together we'd be interested in receiving them.

Best wishes for a screaming success!

Dear Jordan and Fran,
My name is Jon Schwartz. I was part of the last generation of boys lucky enough to attend Horseshoe (1982-90). I was a counselor during the final days of a camp that closed all to early for many of us. I can’t help feeling cheated out of a couple more summers as a counselor. Not being able to visit camp as a floater for extended weekends. Missing out on Post Camp. But most of all, not knowing where I would send my kids. We all feel this way! Just read any one of the 790 postings and it’s easy to understand.

Camp was a special place that we all loved. I feel lucky to have been part of it. I learned so much there. My best friends today are the guys I met as a camper and counselor.

Today I have two wonderful kids. A four year old who will no doubt attend Birchtrail. Like it or NOT! And then there’s my son Zachary. I have often wondered where I would send him. North-Star or Nabegmon (spelling?). Reading your posting this afternoon brought a chill to my spine and a tear to my eye. We have a few years to go before he’s ready for camp, but now I know where he will attend. Thank you! And we’ll see you in six-seven years. Hopefully sooner.

I sit hear at my computer envious of your news. What a dream come true! I wish you and your family all the luck in the world with your new journey.

Hail to the forest!

Jordan,

I remember you well as my team captain and someone to look up to in 1979 (my first woodsman year). Please reserve a spot for my son Jake in 2009 and my future son (due October 20) to be a pioneer in 2012. I wish you the best of luck and I am greatly looking forward to Horseshoe II, the sequel. Please let us know when we can all visit.

P.S. I would gladly volunteer my arcane knowledge of Horseshoe trivia, if desired. I hope you have some nice lacquered wood and a magic marker to start your new Horseshoe builders plaques.

HI,
I was a counsellor at Camp Horseshoe in the hot bicentennial summer of 1976. I was from Ireland and it was my first visit to the USA. Some 27 years later I still have great memories of the camp. I am in America often now for work and each time my plane touches down I remember the first time I landed in Chicargo, ready to transfer to Camp Horseshoe.

I do have a couple of photos so I will get them scanned and e-mail them to you. Delighted that the camp is opening up again and I wish you well with it.

Kind regards
Peter

Dear Jordan,

Are you aware that there are repercussions for those employers who 'knowingly' employ individuals possesing 'illegal alien' status within the U.S.? Chris Giles, your 'Assistant Director?' is one such individual. Do you think this is a good example to set for those boys attending your camp over the summer?

Same John?

Very keen on water-skiing at Camp H in 73?

My experience as a British counsellor (specialisting in sailing) was limited to just one year - 73, but the memories are strong.

I've just found this site whilst taking a trip down memory lane. My oldest daughter has just applied to be a counsellor in the US this coming summer.

I should have mentioned: I'm now an Australian - as is my family.

Same John?

Cheers,

Martin

Dear Jordan, Hope camp is great this year. My son is 9 years old and most of his friends are there this summer 2005. Wondering if we can come visit the site when camp is in session? Can you also send me some info for the next year. Cole's best friend David Kaplan is there. Thia is the first year in 7 that they are not together. So if we can visit and see how wonderful the boys camp is. I think he'll be likely to experience this camp next year. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful summer. Robin Mitzen

I was a counsellor at Horseshoe in 1972. Myself and Bernie Sidman were the 2 Brits. I think my cabin was Ranger A with Jim Eiseman, Kevin Green, Joel Saeks, Perry Greene, Bruce Levy and Ben Fields. Anyone remember me and have any photos from that year.
