Fishing Report July 10, 2002
We have had reports of good panfish action in the normal lakes. Worms, crawlers, and waxies seem to be the preferred bait. Bobber and hooks seem to work well and it's great action for the kids.
Crappies are hitting on slip bobbers baited with crappie minnows. Fish them along the deep side of weedbeds. Beetlespins and jig/tail rigs are getting great action.
Bass are hitting hard. Try Bill's worms,(or rubber worm rig) and surface baits such as jitterbug, Devils Horse, or Scum Frogs. Crawlers and walleye suckers are getting good action to fishing them in the edges of the lilly pads.
Walleyes are suspended on the 4-8 feet above the slopes of the drop offs. The best time for them is the evening and morning in 8-18 feet of water. Live bait on Lindy rigs, or Rapalas seem to be the ticket.
With the heat of summer the Muskies are turning on. Area lakes such as Nancy, Gordon Flowage, and Mathews are giving anglers good action. Top water baits and tail baits are getting good action.
For those of you who want adventure a float trip with a canoe could be the answer. The Totagatic from the Minong Flowage dam downstream and the St. Croix from Hwy T downstream are great trips for Smallmouth Bass.
As always feel free to call us at the Sportsman's Headquarters at 715/466-2086 for information. Remember: Up here the fishing is always good, it's just sometimes the catching is a little slow.
